One Final Sun-Kissed Morning ~ Horton Creek Campground near Bishop, CA

Time to head on down the road once again but still time left to revel in one final sun-kissed morning, as I make a turn to admire the mountain ranges all around me.  The mountains, alpine lakes and meadows have been breathtaking, but I have failed to mention how beautiful the farmland is around this part of California.  For miles, golden meadow grasses sway in the breeze and cattle and horses grace the fields.  I could not resist one final drive down a country road outside the campground in the quiet early morning hours to admire this stunning landscape.  And here is just a glimpse of the beauty that has surrounded us this past week:

BTW, if you happen through Bishop, it is quite the little town.  Stop by the Galen & Barbara Rowell Mountain Light Gallery for some of the most fabulous nature photography I have ever seen.  And if you are hungry, Thai Thai, a nondescript Thai food restaurant at the airport or the Holy Smokes Texas Barbecue are both outstanding.

celebrating the hunt,

family stories

symbolically unfold.

Listen carefully

to the wailing of the wind.

Mother Earth’s impassioned plea ~

“Stop destroying

my gifts, my beauty.

If you continue,

barren soon I will be.”

Chidago Canyon, roughly a 30-45 minute drive northeast of Bishop, CA is where you will find The Volcanic Tableland, a wide expanse of far-flung boulders and deep ravines formed 700,000 years ago, when clouds of ash and rock were spewed forth from volcanic activity in Long Valley.

A few petroglyphs can be seen at Fish Slough, but travel a little further down the road to see the larger panels of these ancient carved rocks at Chidago Canyon and Red Rocks Canyon.

Ever-changing Sky and Mountains ~ Horton Creek Campground ~ Bishop, CA

We are snuggly tucked into the Horton Creek BLM Campground just north of Bishop, CA, with our caravan buddies Nina and Paul.  This was more of an impromptu camping stop after weather reports of dipping temps and snow predictions in the June Lake area had us all collectively saying, “we’re outta here”.  Nina, ever so resourceful, went online and found this little gem.  There were no reviews to check out so we were relying solely on her instincts and she hasn’t steered us wrong yet.  We threw caution to the wind and said “let’s go”.  Her talent for seeking out new and interesting places, well, is just AWESOME!

This place has it all, expansive skies, sprawling desert, 360º mountain views, and Mother Nature has just sprinkled a dusting of snow on the mountaintops after a much-needed rainstorm blew through yesterday.  

We are due down in the San Diego area in a couple of weeks and our nomadic ways will end for a few months.  Until then we are enjoying every sunrise, every walk in the desert, and every sunset ~ all the ever-changing moods nature has to offer.
